Blogs, what I know about wood carving and wood turning

How to get into wood carving and what tools do you need

A lot of people ask about how to get into wood carving. It is a very relaxing and fun hobby. Anyone is welcome to come to the Millstream Wood Carvers LLC clubhouse on any Tuesday from 1PM till 4PM or any Thursday from 6PM till 9PM. there are always club members there to help you get started and you only need to bring yourself. When they come and find out they like carving the next question is what tools to get started. I would start with a basic starter kit that is not very expensive but not really cheap either. I started with this set from Flexcut Knives which is on Amazon https://amzn.to/4gPMEmc

This set is a simple three knives and Flexcut are decent knives that are good quality and do not break the bank. Sure you can spend hundreds of dollars and get really good knives and hundreds of different styles and shapes like these from amazon https://amzn.to/46Fejl3

I would slowly buy more knives and tools as you get more into the hobby. Unless you have a bunch a money to put towards the hobby then go ahead and spend the hundreds, the more you spend the better the tools, but a beginner set from Flexcut is a good quality for a decent price and you will still be able to do almost all beginner projects.

  • Purpleheart pen cases and pens

I had someone who wanted some purpleheart pens, and then wanted some cases. I searched and no one has purpleheart pen cases. So I made some on my own. The pens I turned, the cases I had to hand carve with sharp tools.
